How it works

How to turn handwriting into a font in four steps

Unlike a basic custom-font upload, the complete workflow is here: capture your writing, correct individual glyphs, test the result in real words, and build the finished font.

  1. 01

Download and print the handwriting template

Download the free A4 PDF template and print it at actual size so the corner markers and character boxes stay aligned.

  2. 02

Write the alphabet, numbers, and punctuation

Fill each labeled box with a dark pen. Keep the writing inside the box and use your normal letter shapes.

  3. 03

Upload a clear photo or scan

Upload the completed template as a PDF, JPG, or PNG. The font maker straightens the sheet and detects the characters.

  4. 04

Refine, preview, and build your TTF font

Clean individual glyphs, adjust baseline and spacing, add alternate letterforms, preview real words, and build the finished font.

More than automatic tracing

Fine-tune your custom handwriting font

A scanned alphabet is only the starting point. The character workspace helps you correct the details that make a handwriting font readable and recognizably yours.

Edit individual glyphs

Clean stray marks and redraw strokes without repeating the entire template.

Align letters on a shared baseline

Move and resize characters while comparing them with nearby letters.

Control letter spacing

Adjust left and right spacing for a more natural rhythm in words.

Add character variants

On Pro and Premium, keep alternate versions of a letter and use Natural letter variation in the editor.

Better source, better font

Tips for a clean handwriting template

  • Use a dark, consistent pen. Faint pencil and heavy shadows make character edges harder to detect.
  • Keep every corner marker visible. The markers let the font maker straighten a slightly angled photo.
  • Write inside each box. Leave a little space around the strokes so neighboring characters do not merge.
  • Review words, not only letters. A glyph can look correct alone but still need baseline or spacing adjustments in a sentence.

Custom handwriting font FAQ

Can I turn my handwriting into a font online?+

Yes. Fill in the Handwriting AI template, upload a clear photo or scan, review the detected characters, and build a reusable TrueType font in the browser-based workspace.

What file should I upload to the handwriting font maker?+

Upload the completed Handwriting AI template as a PDF, JPG, or PNG. For the best detection, keep the page flat, use even lighting, photograph it straight on, and make all four corner markers visible.

Which characters can I include in my custom font?+

The full template covers all 94 visible printable ASCII characters: uppercase and lowercase English letters, numbers, punctuation, and symbols. Space is generated automatically and does not need to be handwritten. You can also make a smaller template for selected characters.

Can I edit individual letters after uploading the template?+

Yes. You can clean a glyph, adjust its baseline, size, horizontal position, and left or right spacing, then compare it with neighboring letters in a word preview.

Can one letter have more than one handwritten version?+

Yes on Pro and Premium. Add alternate versions of the same character, then use Natural letter variation in the editor to reduce repeated letter shapes.

Can I download and use the finished handwriting font?+

Starter can save and use a custom font inside Handwriting AI. Pro and Premium can also download the generated TTF for use in other compatible software. You can also upload an existing TTF you own; uploaded fonts count toward the same plan limit.

Do I need an account to create a handwriting font?+

Yes. Sign in to open the font workspace. Free accounts can download the template, import a photo or scan, and preview detected characters. Starter or higher is required to save the character library, build the font, and use it across devices.
